The study of philately includes all aspects of stamp production and use, postal operations, postal rates and routes, and the history of communication by post. The Western Philatelic Library supports research into all aspects of philately. We believe that we have the second largest collection of philatelic books, journals, catalogs, and pamphlets accessible to the general public. In addition to 13,000 books and pamphlets, we have nearly 4,000 bound volumes representing over 400 philatelic journals from 1880 to the present and 4,000 specialist stamp catalogs. Our staff is responsive to the needs of the beginning collector as well as the advanced specialist, author and postal historian.
We endeavor to collect and conserve as much of the body of philatelic literature as we have space and funds to do so. If there are key books or journals in any field of philately that we do not yet have in our collection, please let us know and we will endeavor to locate a copy.
Many of our supporters routinely donate their specialist journals to our library or fund a gift subscription to a favorite philatelic journal so that our collection remains current. Our overseas Members have arranged to swap philatelic publications from their region for some of our duplicate books and journals. We are indebted also to the many authors and publishers who donate copies of their newly published books, as well as many supporters who provide funds for our Acquisitions Program. If you want to participate as a donor and supporter, please email David McNamee or call Roger Skinner on 408-733-0336 or write to us at the Library.
