A Review by Alan Warren
Die Postgebühren Skandinaviens, 5¾ by 8¼ inches, perfect bound, 232 pages, published by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Nordische Staaten, Germany 1999.
The Nordic countries study group of the Society of German Philatelists has brought together the postal rates of the Scandinavian countries into one volume, making this a handy and important single reference work. Specialists for each country have combed the literature and extracted this information which is so important for students of postal history. The countries covered are Denmark, Faroes, Greenland, Finland, Åland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The rates for the Danish West Indies appear at the end of the Denmark section.
Rate tables are provided for the major classes of mail (letters, post cards, registered mail, printed matter, etc.) and then by destination such as local, domestic, Nordic countries, Europe, and abroad. There is some variability in type as each author seems to have used a different word processing program for the tables themselves. The sources of the tables are provided by the authors so that the information can be checked. In most cases a variety of references were used to create the tables.
The book may be available for sale but comes automatically with membership in the study group. Information about this particular book and the organization itself can be obtained from Roland Daebel, Stolzenhagener Weg 4, 16515 Wensickendorf, Germany. Literature dealers may also have the book for direct sale.
