Book Review:  UN Fieldpost

A Review by Alan Warren

FN-FELTPOST, Study Group for War and Fieldpost Connections to Norway, 8 ¼ by 11 ¾ inches, stapled, soft covers, 104 pages, in Norwegian and Swedish, Lillehammer 1997. $33 postpaid from Jay Smith & Associates, Box 650, Snow Camp NC 27349.

This is a collection of articles related to Norwegian and Swedish fieldpost activities of units from these countries at United Nations emergency forces operations around the globe. There are twenty articles dating from 1986 through 1997 and reprinted from several different Norwegian and Swedish journals. Nearly fifty UN peacekeeping and military operations are tabulated at the beginning of the book, indicating locations and year dates.

The focus of these articles is on the Swedish and Norwegian contingents and their mails. Many of the cancellations and cachets are used to illustrate the articles. The book falls short on technical details that would make it a more useful reference. There is no index and the pages are unnumbered. The quality of the illustrations is lacking since the articles appear to be photocopied from the original sources. These sources are given as part of the table of contents, but they are not presented in the bibliographic format.

Recommended for U.N. collectors and those interested in following the Swedish and Norwegian forces in the various U.N. missions.
